Bohr-effect and buffering capacity of hemocyanin from the tarantula E. californicum.

A previous report showed that binding of oxygen to the 24-meric hemocyanin from E. californicum does not correlate linearly with the release of protons as known from hemoglobin. However, this unusual complex phenomenological observation could not be explained at that time. Here, I present a full analysis of the thermodynamic coupling between protons and oxygen for the 24-meric tarantula hemocyanin in Ringer-solution based on the Nested-MWC-model. A strategy is presented which allows to reduce the number of free parameters when fitting the model to the data by including explicitly the equilibrium constants for binding of protons to the different conformations. Influence of plastic deformation on the microstructure and corrosion behaviour of Ti–10Mo–4Zr and Ti–6Al–4V alloys in the Ringer’s solution at 37°C

Abstract The influence of plastic deformation on the microstructure and passivity of Ti–6Al–4V and Ti–10Mo–4Zr is studied. The content of titanium-based compounds in the passive film formed on the alloys increases under straining. In the region where necking occurs, the β-phase content drops in Ti–6Al–4V. The grain orientation spread increases with increasing strain. The quality index of EBSD maps is affected on Ti–10Mo–4Zr (dislocation structures along preferential orientations). The corrosion behaviour is investigated in the Ringer’s solution (37 °C). Results obtained in the anodic and cathodic domains are discussed considering changes described previously.

Corrosion Behaviour of Ti6Al4V and TiMo10Zr4 Alloys in the Ringer’s Solution: Effect of pH and Plastic Strain

The corrosion behaviour of titanium alloys is not well understood – especially the role of the microstructure and plastic strain. In this paper, the influence of the microstructure and plastic strain on the corrosion resistance of TiMo10Zr4 and Ti6Al4V alloys was studied in the Ringer’s solution at 37 °C. Measurements were performed for different pH values and in aerated and de-aerated solutions using potentiodynamic polarization techniques. Results obtained on the two alloys were compared. It was shown that in the absence of plastic strain TiMo10Zr4 shows better corrosion resistance than Ti6Al4V (especially for pH = 8). The influence of Ca2+ antagonists on the ciliary activity of the guinea pig trachea.

The ciliary activity of the guinea pig tracheal respiratory epithelium was measured using a photoelectric device. Fourteen animals were administered 75 mg diltiazem/kg body weight 2 days, 1 day and 4 h prior to the investigation. Thirteen animals served as controls. In the pretreated group, the mean ciliary stroke frequency (13.4 +/- 3.0 Hz) was significantly lower (P = 0.02) than in the control group (16.6 +/- 3.7 Hz). The application of aerosolized 0.3 mmol/l nifedipine solution on the tracheal preparations of the control animals also significantly reduced the stroke frequency (P = 0.02).
